What is a Misalignment?

A Misalignment/misalignment of the spine is a reaction to comon everyday stresses that we as individuals are subjected to

"An interference in the optimal function of the nervous system combined with misalignment of a vertebrae in the spine."

The nervous system is the system that controls and co-ordinates every function in the body.

"Its structure and activities are inseparably interwoven with every aspect of our lives, physical, cultural and intellectual" - Gray's Anatomy 35th Edition

Simply put, a Misalignment is when one or more of your spinal vertebrae is misaligned and may apply pressure on, or cause irritation to your spinal nerves. These nerves come out in between each of the vertebrae in your spine to control your organs, muscles and limbs etc. This pressure or irritation on the nerves then causes those nerves to malfunction and interfere with the signals travelling from your brain to your organs or muscles.

Your nervous system controls and coordinates all the functions of your body. If there is interferece with the signals travelling through your nerves, then parts of your body may not function at 100% of their innate or natural ability.

It is the responsibility of the Doctor of Chiropractic to locate Misalignments, and reduce or correct them. This is done through a series of chiropractic adjustments specifically designed to correct the Vertebral Misalignments in your spine.

What causes Misalignment?
Many of the stresses that we are under in a modern society can result in Misalignments such as the physical stresses of work postures and activities such as repetitive lifting and accidents to the more emotional stresses that we are placed under in our working and family lives.

As the Misalignment can alter the function of the nervous system it can impair the ability of the body to function at its best. This may result in the body sending signals in the form of pain. In regards to the spine common expressions of this are back, neck and shoulder pain, and migraines. By removing the Misalignment or interference in the nervous system Chiropractic can be very successful in alleviating these symptoms. We must be mindful however of the nervous system component of the Misalignment and that the effect of a Misalignment may not always be expressed as the above pain syndromes.
